

A technical meeting for the Marwat 2 project was held today, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, with the participation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Libya and the Marwat 2 Project Coordinator. This meeting was held within the framework of joint coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Water Resources, the two national entities overseeing the project.
This meeting is part of efforts to strengthen national leadership in the implementation of the Marwat 2 project. Participants included relevant national entities such as the Agricultural Research Center, the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences, the National Meteorological Center, the Libyan Agriculture and Environment Organization, and the Ministry of Water Resources’ project liaison.
The meeting included two presentations outlining the background, objectives, and main components of the Marwat 2 project, its role in supporting sustainable water management in the agricultural sector, improving irrigation water productivity, and promoting data-driven planning based on scientific indicators.
The meeting also discussed project implementation mechanisms for the next phase, the role of technical teams, and coordination frameworks between the FAO and national entities to ensure integrated roles and the achievement of practical, applicable, and replicable outcomes. At the conclusion of the meeting, a group of agricultural projects in five different regions were selected for study, evaluation, and qualification, in accordance with the approved Merwat 2 project document and in line with the project’s objectives and work plan.
This meeting reflects the commitment of national and international partners to supporting the Merwat 2 project and strengthening collaborative efforts, which will contribute to improving water use efficiency in agriculture and achieving water and food security in Libya.
